# Helping members exchange time fairly

Good habits that make exchanges clear and fair for everyone.

---

Timebanking works because everyone's time is valued equally. One hour of help is worth one hour, whatever the task. Here is how you can help members keep exchanges fair.

## Before an exchange

- Encourage members to agree clearly what will be done, when and roughly how long it will take.
- Suggest they use messages on the site to agree details. This keeps a record.
- Remind members that nobody has to accept a request they are not comfortable with.

## After an exchange

- Encourage both members to confirm the hours promptly.
- If they disagree, help them talk it through calmly. Most disagreements are misunderstandings.

## Being fair as a broker

- Apply the same rules to everyone.
- Do not handle exchanges, reports or corrections that involve you, a relative or a close friend. Ask another broker.
- Explain your decisions in plain words, especially when you reject something.
- Keep corrections to balances rare, agreed and explained.

## Encouraging everyone to take part

Some members find it easier to give than to ask. Remind people that receiving help is part of timebanking too. Some members may need help to think of what they can offer. Everyone has something to give.
