# Changing the Broker Panel settings

Which messages are copied to brokers and how exchange approval works are set in Configuration.

[Configuration](/broker/configuration) holds the settings for broker work in your community. Settings marked **Admin only** can only be changed by an admin. You can see them, but not change them.

After changing anything, press **Save Changes** . **Unsaved changes** shows until you do.

## Settings brokers can change

These decide which messages are copied to brokers:

- Copy first contact between members: copies the first message between any two members.
- Copy messages from new members: copies messages from members who joined recently. New-member monitoring window (days) sets how long "recently" is.
- Copy messages on high-risk listings: copies messages about listings tagged high or critical risk.
- Random sample percentage: copies this share of all other messages at random, for spot checks. For example, 5 means about 5 in every 100. At 100, every message is copied, the same as Copy all messages to broker, so agree any high number with your admin first.
- Archive retention (days): how long reviewed, unflagged message copies are kept before they are deleted.

## Settings only an admin can change

- Broker messaging enabled: the main switch. When it is off, no messages are copied to brokers, whatever the other settings say.
- Copy all messages to broker: copies every message between members.
- Broker approval required: exchanges wait for a broker's approval.
- Auto-approve low-risk exchanges: lets most exchanges go ahead without a broker.
- Max hours without approval: with auto-approve on, exchanges above this many hours still need a broker.
- Insurance tracking enabled: lets members add insurance records in their settings.

## Choosing settings

Copying more messages gives brokers more to read. It also reaches further into members' privacy. Agree the settings with your admin and safeguarding lead. Choose the lightest settings that keep people safe.
