# How do I start a group?

Create a new group, choose who can join, and become its owner.

You can start a group from the [Groups](/groups) page.

1. Press Create Group.
2. Type a Group Name and a Description that explains what the group is for.
3. Add a Location if the group is for one area.
4. Add a Group Image and a Cover Image if you like. JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP work, up to 8 MB.
5. Choose who can join. The choices are explained below.
6. Press Create Group.

You become the group's **Owner** .

## Who can join

- Public — any member can join straight away
- Private — members ask to join and a manager accepts them
- Secret — the group is hidden and people join only by invitation. Not every community offers this.

## Things to know

- Some communities check new groups before they appear.
- Some communities do not let members create groups, or limit how many groups one member can own. If you cannot create a group, ask a community administrator.
- Your community may offer Start from a template (optional). A template fills in suggested settings for you.

Only members can see what is posted inside a group, even a public one.
