# Sending a private message

Start a one-to-one conversation with another member.

Messages are private conversations between you and one other member.

## Start a conversation

- From a profile: press Send Message.
- From the Messages page: open Messages, press New Message, search for the member and choose them.
- From a listing: press Send Message, if your community shows it. The conversation then shows which offer or request it is about.

## Write and send

Type in **Type a message...** and press Enter, or press the send button. To start a new line, hold Shift and press Enter. A message can be up to 10,000 characters.

Your conversations are listed in the **Inbox** tab. Use **Search conversations...** to find one. Inside a conversation, the magnifier button searches its messages.

If you see **Direct Messaging Disabled** , your community has turned off private messages. Use exchange requests instead. If you see **Messaging Restricted** , a community administrator has limited your messaging. Contact your coordinator if you think this is a mistake.
