# Do new members get a starting balance?

Some communities give new members hours to start with. It is a community setting.

Your community may give new members some hours to start with. This lets you ask for help before you have given any.

Whether there is a starting balance, and how many hours it is, is set by your community. When it applies, the hours are usually added when you join or when your account is approved. They appear in your [transaction history](/wallet) .

If you expected a starting balance and cannot see one, contact your coordinator.

Your community's administrators can also add hours to members' wallets for other reasons.
